Annually, the Salem Animal Shelter receives 1,397 animals and while the average stay is typically 3-4 weeks, some of these furry friends have had to wait up to 6 months to find their new home. Longer stays for the animals equates to changing needs.
- OUR CHALLENGE: To accommodate the longer stays, our facility needs to be updated to have indoor and outdoor spaces for both dogs and cats. Our aim is that our feline friends, who are currently sharing the same space as our canine friends, will have a space of their own and that the dogs we care for will have the critically needed outdoor space to allow for the physical exercise they need to stimulate their senses.
- OUR GOAL: The garage building which has saved many lives but was only meant to be a temporary solution, will be replaced with an addition to the existing shelter building. The current unwanted “dog pound” feel of our shelter will be transformed to reflect a more modern animal shelter - looking and feeling like a haven for our four-legged friends until they find new homes.
- HOW YOU CAN SUPPORT OUR VISION: This is a 100% Humane Society project to help animals at the shelter!
